ROADS AND BUDGET PLANNING
The ministry of works in the first quarter of 2009 worked closely with the Ministry of Environment/Public Utilities and other vital government agencies to put together a list of roads that would be constructed in the current budget year. In the appropriate subhead, a total pf 73 roads selected from Benin City and the three senatorial districts were approved for a budget provision of N14, 608, 682, 000.00. While government intends to construct these roads, government also ensured that the worrisome environmental problems of flooding and erosion in the vicinity of the roads are solved by providing funds in the 2009 budget for erosion control.
BUDGET ACTUALIZATION
It is generally well known that not much road works can be carried out during the rainy season. This not withstanding, the Ministry of Works has carried out rehabilitation works on 14 selected roads. The roads recently rehabilitated by the Ministry’s direct labour are as follows:

Ben Oni Street
Obakhabhaye/Oba Market Junction Road
College Road
Agadagudu Street
Boundary Road
Uwa Street (by 2nd East Circular Road)
Universal-Oghobaghase Technical College Road
Giwa Amu Road
Jemide/Akhionbare Street
Ihama Road
Rehabilitation of the named roads are being undertaken at a cost of about N130 million. Another batch of selected failed roads will be awarded for rehabilitation as soon as these are fully completed. Meanwhile, the rehabilitation of New Lagos Road, by Eghosa/Okhoro Junction to create a smooth and motorable road after successfully desilting the drains and manholes around the area to ensure easy flow of storm water will commence shortly.
